Art Major, Minor
and Joint Requirements

The primary objectives of the academic discipline of art are designed so that students who successfully complete the undergraduate major in the art will be able to demonstrate an:

1. Understanding of aesthetic expression as a global language;
2. Acquisition of knowledge relative to aesthetic elements as concepts;
3.Understanding of art in a historical context;
4. Technical proficiency in at least four of the seven media that are currently offered
5. Understanding of the social, business, political, and gender-specific dynamics that influence the making and interpreting of art.

Major Requirements

Requirements for the art major, in addition to the university degree requirements are outlined within the Undergraduate Bulletin. Required major courses are listed below:

Minor Requirements

Minor in Film Studies

In addition to the major, the Department of Arts and Languages offers two formal minors: interior design and film studies and a concentration in graphic design in collaboration with Watkins College of Art, Design & Film.

Fisk University, through a collaborative agreement with Watkins College of Art, Design & Film, offers a minor in film studies. This agreement allows students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs at Fisk University to earn a minor in film studies by cross-registering for courses offered at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. Participating students must be in good standing in a baccalaureate degree program at Fisk University, and must submit an application to enroll in the minor in film studies program at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. Watkins will require a Fisk student to apply to Watkins as a "non-degree-seeking student". You must complete the Visiting Student Registration Form, with the approval signature, for each term you attend. This application requirement may be amended if you have been approved by Fisk for specified consecutive terms of enrollment. While attending Watkins, you will be identified as "Special Status/Fisk". The admission application fee is waived.

Minor Interior Design

Fisk University through a collaborative agreement with Watkins College of Art, Design & Film offers Fisk students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs the possibility to earn a minor in interior design at Watkins College of Art, Design, Film. Participating students must be in good standing in a baccalaureate degree program at Fisk University, and must submit an application to enroll in the minor in interior design program. Students do not have to apply for admission to, or register at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film.

To enroll in the minor of interior design, students must have completed CORE 150 - Composition I and ART 101- Life Drawing and Composition (or their equivalent, as determined by Fisk University) with grades of "C" or better. These courses will be accepted as equivalent to the Watkins College of Art, Design & Film courses ENG 101 - English Composition I and ART III- Drawing I, respectively, for the purpose of satisfying the courses of prerequisite requirements for the interior design courses included in the minor program of study.

Requirements for the joint major: Students wishing to combine art with another major may do so in accord with University regulations. Such arrangements require the cooperation of both departments involved, and the Art component must total 24 hours, as follows:

Graphic Design Concentration

Fisk University, through a collaborative agreement with Watkins College of Art, Design & Film offers a concentration in graphic design. This agreement allows students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs at Fisk University to complete a concentration in graphic design by cross-registering for courses offered at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film Participating students must be enrolled in good standing in the Bachelor of Science in Art degree program at Fisk University, and must submit an application to enroll in the concentration in graphic design program. This program is not available to students who have already earned the Bachelor’s degree, or who are enrolled in other programs of study. You must complete the Visiting Student Registration Form, with the approval signature, for each term you attend. This application requirement may be amended if you have been approved by Fisk for specified consecutive terms of enrollment. While attending Watkins, you will be identified as "Special Status/Fisk". The admission application fee is waived. The Bachelor of Science in Art degree earned through participation in this program will be awarded by Fisk University
