Data Science Major
The Fisk University Data Science program is the first dedicated undergraduate data science program at a Historically Black College or University as well as in the state of Tennessee. The Data Science program is one of the newest and fastest-growing programs at Fisk University. The Department offers both a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a Data Science minor. The Data Science program strives to bring Innovation to Passion through partner discipline requirements where students can choose a partner discipline including but not limited to Art, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Political Science or Business. This allows students to use the innovation of data science to explore their passion. The program is also designed to allow students to easily add a joint major within the 4-year degree program. These partnerships allow students to complete degrees in areas like Computational Biology and Computational Social Science.
This is accomplished through four initiatives:
1) The Sophomore, Junior, and Senior seminar courses
2) The Data Science Club
3) The Data Science Innovation Hub
4) Industry Partnerships.
The Fisk University Data Science program offers an innovative approach to Data Science preparing students for a diverse workforce.
Chair's Welcome Statement
Thank you for your interest in Data Science and Bioinformatics at Fisk University. As the chair, I would like to welcome you to the home of the first dedicated undergraduate data science program at a Historically Black College or University as well as in the state of Tennessee. The program is designed to help each student bring innovation to their passion through our Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Art, Minor and Joint Degree program. Our department prepares students for a competitive workforce through small classes, experimental learning in and outside of the classroom and state of the art instruction.
Our academic disciplines allow you to specialize your focus to one area of interest. They are a part of your transition into higher education which involves being aware that each discipline is a distinct discourse community with specific vocabularies, styles, and modes of communication.

The academic challenges at Fisk are formidable. Nowhere would I be without the encouragement and support of my professors and the university staff, who go above and beyond to ensure that all of my fellow Fiskites have a firm grasp on everything from Python and Big Data to Registration queries and navigating the John Hope and Aurelia E. Franklin Library's resources. Every individual at Fisk is recognized as more than just a number.
