Education

Objectives:

  1. Create modular asynchronous short courses that provide scientific background and context for each of the three thematic projects 
  2. Host monthly BioSS-hosted journal clubs or works-in-progress sessions
  3. Integrate BioSS-aligned projects into relevant course-associated laboratories
  4. Apply educational research tools to identify which aspects of our activities are most associated with fostering interest and confidence in pursuing graduate study and careers in STEM fields. 

Year One Goals and Progress:

Host monthly BioSS-hosted journal clubs or works-in-progress sessions.

  • Sessions are ongoing and will be expanded to included students and post-docs

Apply educational research tools to identify which aspects of our activities foster interest and confidence in pursuing STEM careers.

  •   Baseline data has been captured with pre-surveys. 
  •        Currently  identifying potential control groups

Professional Development

Objectives:

  1. Create a Bridge to Research at Fisk University via summer research experiences for Community College students
  2. Scaffold mentoring, so that each trainee is mentored by the next-advanced level of trainee or professional, and rely on these tiered relationships for research review and feedback for adjusting to each stage of research training.
  3. Expand our successful professional development activities in our Master’s-to-PhD program to include stage-appropriate components for Community College and Undergraduate trainees, as well as for post-doctoral fellows transitioning to faculty careers.

  • First Community College Students has done research, will have 3 in Summer 2017

Expand Professional development activities.

  • Increased professional development course from one semester to full-year
