Financial Aid Checklist

We hope you have enjoyed your summer vacation.  If you plan on using financial aid for the 2007-2008 academic year, please make sure that you have completed the following steps to ensure that your registration process is as seamless as possible:

Step One:

  •  Complete a FAFSA. Submit the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA can be completed on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Most Aid is awarded on a “first-come, first-serve” basis.

Step Two:

  • Read your Student Aid Report (SAR) carefully. Shortly after completing the FAFSA you will receive a SAR from the U.S. Department of Education via email. Please read this information carefully as there may be additional steps that you need to complete in order for your FAFSA to be fully processed.

Step Three:

  • Complete Verification.  If you are selected for verification:
  1. Download the appropriate verification worksheet from www.fisk.edu/finaid/documents.html.  Fax the completed worksheet to the Office of Student Financial Aid at 329-8774.  Please make sure that this form is signed by the parent(s) and student.
  2.   If you are a dependent student, collect your and your parent(s)’ financial documents (signed Federal income tax forms, W-2 forms, etc.)

If you are an independent student, collect your (and your spouse’s) financial documents (signed Federal income tax forms, W-2 forms, etc.).

Step Four:

  • Apply for Loans.  Log on to www.fisk.edu, then click on Financial Aid.  Click on “Apply for Loans” and select the loan that you wish to apply for.
  • Complete Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling.  If you are a first-time Stafford Loan borrower, you must complete online interest counseling before your Stafford Loan can be processed.  You may complete this at www.mapping-your-future.org

Also:

  • Read all application materials and financial aid notifications.  Most financial aid funds have conditions for receipt and renewal, such as earning a certain grade point average (GPA) or being enrolled full time.
  • Fisk University offers and interest free payment plan option through Tuition Management Systems (TMS).  You may also sign up for the payment plan when you arrive at Fisk.  You must be prepared to pay the enrollment deposit as well as the first payment in order to enroll in this service.  Please call the Student Account Office for any questions regarding TMS at 615-329-8548.
  • All payment arrangements for fall 2007 must be made no later than 5:00 pm central time on August 10th.  All loans must be applied for by this date.
