Jamaal B. Sheats
Jamaal B. Sheats is a native of Brentwood, Tennessee. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Art from Fisk University in 2002, Sheats founded Sheats Repousse’, where he specializes in metal relief sculpture. Over the last decade Sheats’ art has become more interdisciplinary, which has garnered national and international interest. Specifically, his works now span from metal relief sculpture and painting, to mixed-media are being displayed in galleries and museums in the United States and Asia.
In 2011 Sheats received a Master of Fine Art in Studio Art from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Art-Boston (SMFA) where he was awarded the honor of being a SMFA Post-graduate Teaching Fellow. While Sheats has received numerous awards and accolades, including being one of five “Artists to Watch” in the Boston Globe, he was recently one of eight Artists commissioned by the Tennessee Art Commission to create works for Nashville’s historic Music City Center.
Today, Jamaal Sheats continues to tell stories of life, emotion, culture, and history by painting, pulling, carving, hammering, sketching, and engraving on metal, wood, canvas, and other materials. Given his passion for art and education, Sheats is preparing to open the Charlotte Art Project, a 2800 square foot studio and project gallery in Nashville, Tennessee and also returned to his alma mater, Fisk University, as a faculty member in the Art Department.
