Financial Aid – Related Concerns

Spring and summer are the busiest times of the academic year for the Office of Student Financial Aid. Officers may be difficult to reach as we are trying to assist both new and returning families. Here are some tips to ensure good customer service:

Complete your FAFSA Beginning January 1
The student financial aid process begins with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you have not completed the FAFSA and indicated Fisk as an institution to receive your information by inserting our school code (003490), then our office will not have access to your records. The office also requires all domestic students who have received an institutional scholarship to complete the FAFSA. Failure to complete the FAFSA will result in no financial aid award for the academic year or scholarship offer being rescinded. If you have not done the FAFSA, please visit www.fafsa.ed.gov.

FAFSA PIN and Student Aid Report
When contacting the Office of Student Financial Aid, please have your FAFSA PIN and a copy of your Student Aid Report available. Doing this will allow officers to more rapidly answer your questions. Your Student Aid Report contains a section entitled “Comments”. Please review the comments section as many of the questions asked are covered in this section.

Expected Family Contribution
Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is a numerical determination made by the US Department of Education that serves as an eligibility guideline for financial aid officers. This figure is used to determine whether you can receive a Pell Grant, etc. This is one measure used to determine a financial aid package.

Verification
Verification is a random process initiated by the US Department of Education at the time a student submits the FAFSA. You can sometimes determine if you have been selected by looking for an asterisk on the Student Aid Report near the EFC indication. If you have been selected, no financial aid award can be completed until this requirement is satisfied. Typically, those selected for verification are required to submit worksheets and current year tax documentation. If you have been selected, the worksheets can be accessed here: http://www.fisk.edu/finaid/documents.html.

Tax Returns/Supporting Documentation
If you are visiting campus or contacting the Office of Student Financial Aid by phone, please have copies of your current tax returns. Also, if presented with a unique situation that requires other kinds of documentation (legal records, etc.) please have copies available to fax or submit on-demand. This will also reduce the amount of time spent on your file and increase our ability to serve you.

Housing
Fisk University has four residence halls. Typically, freshmen women are housed in Jubilee Hall and freshmen men are housed in New Livingstone Hall. Housing paperwork is issued to students who have been accepted and secured with the return of the non-refundable enrollment deposit, completed housing contracts and MMR paperwork. For more information on housing contracts, please contact the Office of Student Engagement at (615) 329-8597.

MMR Health Records
Tennessee law requires all students who enroll in Tennessee schools to provide documentation of their Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) paperwork. You should have received the forms with your housing contract and we cannot provide on-campus accommodations without proper MMR documentation. If you did not submit the forms, please do so immediately to the Office of Student Engagement. You can fax the information to (615) 329-8714.

Student Medical Insurance
Documented medical coverage is required of all students attending Fisk University. Students who are covered under a parental policy must provide documentation that the policy meets minimum institutional guidelines. Students who are not covered will be required to purchase insurance coverage. For more information, please contact the Office of Student Engagement (615) 329-8597

Campus Visit
In addition to our academic reputation, small size and rich set of traditions, many students decide that Fisk is the best fit for them through a campus visit. The Office of Admission is open during the summer months if you would like to come to see the campus. Please contact or (615) 329-8665.

New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation is for both new students and their parents and will last approximately one week. It covers areas important to the student’s successful transition: institutional expectations, time management, decision-making, academic goals and self-confidence. New parents/guardians are given the opportunity to meet key campus decision-makers during Parents Orientation which last for approximately two days. Attendance for the student is expected at all events and Parent Orientation will conclude with the annual Parting Ceremony. The entire Orientation schedule is expected to be available in early summer.
