These courses, offered through Meharry Medical College and Tennessee State University, are available only to students majoring in business administration (management concentration) with a minor in health care administration. The courses are not available as electives.

HC 201, INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION, 3 credits. An overview of the American health care system, with emphasis on acquaintance with the many varied aspects of the entire field, including terminology, facilities, placements, and people. The subject areas include history and development of the American health care system; descriptive analysis of the various levels of health care delivery and the patient care system; financing of health care; and an introduction to governmental involvement in the health care system.

HC 210, APPROACHES TO PLANNING IN HEALTH CARE, 3 credits. The principal theories and methodologies of the planning disciplines are studied via lectures, readings, case studies, and guest lectures. The philosophical foundations of various methodologies and those of the planning process are examined. Specific interpretation and application of comprehensive health planning legislation is considered. Emphasis is also given to the concepts of regionalization. The course is recommended for students considering employment or graduate study in planning. Prerequisite: HC 201.

HC 310, HEALTH ECONOMICS, 3 credits. The economics of the health care industry, with attention to the supply and demand for health care services. The economic mechanisms of the health care industry, methods of paying, cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit analysis, national health insurance plans, and government intrusion. The economics of the present health care system are also analyzed in relation to the poor and to minorities. Prerequisites: HC 201, ECON 230-240.

HC 322, SEMINAR: HEALTH AND FACILITIES LAW, 3 credits. Introduction to the specifics of health-related legislation and programs, and their implications for providers and for medical caseworkers. Liability of health care facilities and staff for injuries to patients, and abuses of patient rights by the health care system. Malpractice lawsuits and legislation; collection of bills; labor laws; informed consent of patients to medical and surgical procedures. Prerequisite: HC 201.

HC 421, HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT I, 3 credits. The application of management techniques to the administration of health care facilities. The various administrative management elements of health care systems' approaches to decision making, the establishment of management objectives and techniques, the management of complex and normative organizations, and different levels of administrative management. Prerequisites: HC 201, 202; BAD 260.

HC 490, HEALTH CARE RESEARCH, 3 credits. An introduction to research design, with emphasis on application of statistical and research techniques to problems of concern to the health care system. Students carry through to completion a manageable research problem. Prerequisites: HC 201, 202; BAD 260.
