The objective of the symposium is to promote research and inter-disciplinary collaboration. The symposium provides an opportunity for our students and faculty to share the results of their recent research efforts with their peers and the university community. Griffith, PhD Title: The Need for "Creative Maladjustment" in Research on Black Men's Health Abstract In September of 1967, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. addressed a national health organization and he argued that researchers should seek "creative maladjustment" and not accept and adjust to social and inhumanity. Despite this warning, we tend to oversimplify unjust racial and gender differences in health and treat them as though they are normal and acceptable, and therefore the solution lies in simply getting people to engage in healthier behavior. In this presentation, Dr. Griffith will describe how we need to reconsider the factors that determine why Black men, for example, live significantly shorter and sicker lives than all other race by gender groups in the US, and the solutions that are within our grasp of we pursue and answer the right questions, and correct the errors in the ways we have conceptualized, studied and sought to address Black men’s health. Short Bio Derek M. Griffith is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Health and Society and General Internal Medicine and Public Health and the Director of the Institute for Research on Men’s Health at Vanderbilt University. Previously, Dr. Griffith was an Assistant Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education in the University of Michigan, School of Public Health, Assistant Director of the Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture and Health and the Director of the Center on Men’s Health Disparities at Michigan. Dr. Griffith’s research focuses primarily on understanding and improving the health and well-being of Black American men. He also has written extensively on community-based approaches to reducing unjust racial differences in health, and he has trained and mentored undergraduate, masters and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in these research areas. Dr. Griffith has published over 50 papers and book chapters, given numerous conference presentations. His research has been funded by the American Cancer Society, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and his work has been covered by such news outlets as MSN, NPR, Time Magazine, United Press International, US News and World Report and USA Today. Dr. Griffith his received a Bachelor of Arts (double major) in Psychology and Afro-American Studies from the University of Maryland at College Park, completed a predoctoral clinical psychology internship at Yale University School of Medicine, earned his Masters degree and PhD in Clinical-Community Psychology from DePaul University, and then completed the W.K. Kellogg Community Health Scholars postdoctoral fellowship in community-based participatory health disparities research at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BEST PAPER AWARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The "Best Paper" will be selected in each major, for which a sufficient number of abstracts are received. Dr. Arnold Burger has announced that Title VII Grant will provide the financial support to partially cover the cost of refreshments during symposium. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PAPER SUBMISSION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Submissions are required in electronic format only: - Submit the "Abstract" in an electronic format (MS Word format) using Easychair, https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=frs13 - For formatting and other instructions, please check the conference website. ** General Instructions ** - Submit your abstract in MS Word format (AbstractForm-2013.doc), at the following site, https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=frs13 - For abstracts with multiple co-authors, ALL co-authors must be added in the submission system. - All co-authors will receive confirmation email from the submission system; it will serve as the receipt for abstract submission. - For sample abstracts, please check Sample-Abstracts.pdf ** Formatting Instructions ** - The title should appear in "Title Case", capitalize the first word, the last word, and all major words in between. You should NOT use “Capital Case”, where all letters are capitalized. - The author line should follow the title. Include all authors, including research mentor(s) and faculty advisor(s). The presenter should have an asterisk placed at the end of his/her last name. - When the presenter is a student, place the name of the “Faculty Advisor” at the end of the abstract. Faculty advisor can also be the research mentor, or may be a different person entirely. If research was done at another institution, please consult with the external research mentor and include a Fisk faculty member as a “Faculty Advisor”. - Give a brief description of the paper (250 words or less) explaining the purpose, design, methods, findings and/or conclusion. The entire abstract should be error-free because the abstract will be printed as submitted. - Posters are secured with Velcro and Velcro will be provided to the presenters. ** Poster Preparation ** - The presentation board is 4 ft. by 4 ft. and is made of fabric. - Your poster size (PowerPoint) should be 34 inches (height) by 44 inches (width). - The layout should be readable from a distance. Your pages will be mounted on the presentation board with velcro (which you must provide—can be bought by the yard at Dollar General; is also available as dots from Walmart). - Remember the presentation is visual. This is NOT an essay or prose paper. Please be creative in designing your posters. - The format should be your PowerPoint presentation (keep the font size for most text around 24 to 28 pts., even 32 pts.; titles and headings can be up to 44 pts.). - Please obtain a PowerPoint template from your mentor and make sure it is set with the right parameters (PAGE SETUP: height 34", and width 44"). - Make sure that the text and figures are at least one inch away from the four (4) margins of the poster. ** Printing Instructions ** We will use CPCoM/CREST printing facility available in 303 DuBois Hall. 1.Start PowerPoint 2.Go to File, Page Setup, select Print 3.Select "HP DesignJet 800 42 by HP" printer (pulldown menu) 4.Click on Properties 5.Go to paper size ANSI E-34x44. 6.Go to Orientation, select Landscape, then click OK, and click OK to print. 7.The printer will take about 10 minutes to warm up and print, depending on how large the file is. 8.If for some reason you may want to stop printing, push the orange button that says CANCEL.
