The
General Alumni Association
of Fisk University, Inc. (GAAFU) was incorporated in Nashville,
Tennessee in 1985. It is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose
sole mission is to support Fisk University. A Board of Directors
oversees the operations and conducts the business of the GAAFU. The
Board of Directors meets four times a year. Organized into five
regions, each region conducts a regional conference at which time its
leadership is elected. The regions include the Eastern Region, Southern
Region, Southwestern Region, Midwestern Region and the Far Western
Region. As mandated by its Constitution and By-Laws, a convention is
held in Nashville every other year at which time the national officers
are elected. The Executive Director of Alumni Affairs of Fisk
University also serves as the Executive Director of the GAAFU and is
responsible for implementing its programs and directing its day-to-day
operations.
The corporate office of the GAAFU is located on the campus of Fisk
University in historic Richardson House (circa 1905), listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. Extensive renovation of this
structure was completed in 1989 with funding secured by the GAAFU. The
preservation project qualified for and received an architectural award
from the Metropolitan Nashville/Davidson County Historical Commission
during it 17th Annual Architectural Awards Program in 1989.
