The General Alumni Association of Fisk University, Inc. (GAAFU) was incorporated in Nashville, Tennessee in 1985. It is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose sole mission is to support Fisk University. A Board of Directors oversees the operations and conducts the business of the GAAFU. The Board of Directors meets four times a year. Organized into five regions, each region conducts a regional conference at which time its leadership is elected. The regions include the Eastern Region, Southern Region, Southwestern Region, Midwestern Region and the Far Western Region. As mandated by its Constitution and By-Laws, a convention is held in Nashville every other year at which time the national officers are elected. The Executive Director of Alumni Affairs of Fisk University also serves as the Executive Director of the GAAFU and is responsible for implementing its programs and directing its day-to-day operations.

The corporate office of the GAAFU is located on the campus of Fisk University in historic Richardson House (circa 1905), listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Extensive renovation of this structure was completed in 1989 with funding secured by the GAAFU. The preservation project qualified for and received an architectural award from the Metropolitan Nashville/Davidson County Historical Commission during it 17th Annual Architectural Awards Program in 1989.
