LEAD Program

Leadership Enrichment and Academic Development program (LEAD) is a Student Support Services (SSS) initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Trio Programs. The U.S. Department of Education awarded the SSS four-year grant to Fisk University in 2001 to begin the LEAD program. Funding was extended for an additional period of four years in 2005. We are currently funded for an additional five year period scheduled to end in 2015. The LEAD Program provides personal, career and academic counseling, tutorial services, academic skills enrichment workshops and cultural activities to qualified students. The LEAD Program is under the auspices of the Office of the Provost.

Targeted to first-generation, economically challenged and/or differently abled students, LEAD is funded to serve 200 students each year. Students who are enrolled in the Program are provided services throughout their enrollment at Fisk University. The LEAD Program’s professional staff, tutors and peer mentors enable students to:

  • increase retention and graduation rates of participants
  • achieve academic success
  • receive additional assistance with difficult courses
  • explore career and graduate school options
  • meet the University’s requirements for their degree choice

The degree to which the Program accomplishes its purpose depends upon the individual student. The challenge for the student is to know the available services and to use them as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Students may apply for admission to the LEAD Program by completing an application at our office in the President's Residence. For more information call (615) 329-8882.Â
