Welcome to the exciting world of study abroad at Fisk University. As part of our mission to internationalize our campus, we are involved in several study abroad programs. The International Education Enrichment and Exchange Center (IEEEC) will assist you in selecting carefully designed, high quality academic programs that ensure a totally integrated and well-rounded study abroad experience.

As students of the 21st century preparing to meet your personal and academic goals, you must also prepare to achieve in an ever-changing and increasingly global society. IEEEC can make it possible for you to explore other cultures, learn a new language, or experience foreign business practices firsthand. Whatever your academic or personal goals, IEEEC can help in every aspect of the cultural/ global aspects of their journey.

 

The International Education Enrichment and Exchange Center provides general and individual advising for any student interested in studying abroad. We strive to provide quality advising and accessible information to enable students to make appropriate program choices. We believe that study abroad programs should be affordable and available to students from all academic disciplines.

 

Studying abroad as a student at Fisk University offers a once in a lifetime window of opportunity into the world. While people usually travel abroad to visit other countries and explore tourist sites, it is uniquely transforming to live, study and learn in another culture as a student. IEEEC can help you embrace the world in new ways. Many students cite their study abroad experience as one of the most important and life changing activities during their collegiate career.

 

The benefits of study abroad are many and varied. Study Abroad:

• Prepares students to live and work in an increasingly multi-cultural and interconnected world.
• Stimulates academic discipline and learning to function in a different system.
• Facilitates fluency in a foreign language, and it is much easier to learn a language when immersed.
• Introduces students to the history, arts and culture of a host country.
• Enhances job prospects as employers in our global economy value the skills polished by overseas experiences.

 

Most students return exhilarated by the experience. They bring fresh perspectives to the Fisk classroom. They are more confident about living in today's world. "It was the best experience of my life" is a frequent comment.

 

Requirements for the Study Abroad and Exchange Programs

In order to participate in credit earning study abroad and exchange programs, you must be:

• A full-time Fisk degree candidate, pursuing a normal program of study
• A sophomore and have a cumulative GPA of 2.85 or better
• Registered with The IEEEC located in the Boyd House
• In a program selected in consultation with your faculty academic advisor
• In good financial and social standing with the University
• Approved for your study abroad experience by the office of the Provost. Please complete a Study Away Form
• Approved by the office of the Registrar. Please complete the pre-registration/registration form.

 

While you study abroad, you remain registered at Fisk University. As a registered student and U.S. citizen, you are entitled to financial aid. Most financial aids (federal loans and grants as well may be applied to cover the cost of a study abroad experience. (Check with the financial aid staff to see what is available for your use).

 

Study abroad involves a lot of advance preparation. It is imperative that you begin thinking about a study abroad experience at least one year in advance.

 

Study abroad programs usually have deadlines in:

• September and October for Spring, and
• March and April for Fall

 

The IEEEC requires that you apply by September 1, for spring; and March 1, for fall programs.

 

Congratulations on your decision to study abroad. This section of the website is designed to walk you through the steps of the study abroad process. Read on to find out how to pursue the study abroad opportunity that is best for you.

• Attend a general advising session
• Research possible program options
• Make an individual advising appointment with the study abroad advisor
• Check in with your academic department
• Apply to your program of choice
• Once accepted, complete your study abroad paperwork
• Attend a pre-departure orientation

 

Before you go abroad, you must:

• Assume responsibility for all the elements necessary for your personal preparation for the program.
• Get a passport. Don't wait until the last minute. You will need to order official certified copies of your birth certificate from the country where you were born for the passport paperwork. The entire process could take a couple of months, so start as soon as you begin considering going abroad.
• Make sure your passport is valid for travel throughout your time abroad, and for six months to a year thereafter (an immigration requirement for many countries).
• Secure any necessary visas or study permits for your destination country or countries. Do not wait until the last minute.
• Make sure the offices of the Registrar, Provost and Financial Aid know that you are studying abroad.
• Discuss your proposed study abroad schedule and your proposed returning date with your faculty academic advisor/s and the IEEEC staff.
• Ask for the appropriate forms in the IEEEC and turn them in to the Office of the Registrar for credit earning programs.
